The government of Malawi confirmed Tuesday that nine other persons along with Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima perished when the aircraft they were flying in crashed in the Chikangawa mountain range. Tuesday became national day of mourning announced by President Lazarus Chakwera. Later on, it became uncertain whether Mary, Chilima's wife, had also been on the plane when it crashed, as the government had initially said. Chilima, 51, and the other passengers were heading to attend the funeral for the former attorney general for the country when their flight vanished off radar. Air traffic officials said that poor visibility forced the jet to miss landing at Mzuzu airport, approximately 200 miles north of the city; the pilot had been advised to go back to Lilongwe when the aircraft disappeared.
