On Sunday, Bryson DeChambeau emerged victorious in his second US Open title, defeating Rory McIlroy in a nail-biting finale at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. DeChambeau, the star of LIV Golf, shot a final round of 71, which was one stroke over par, to finish one stroke clear of his Northern Irish counterpart at six under par. This victory is his first major of 2020.
It resulted in McIlroy, the world's third-ranked golfer, experiencing yet another agonizing near-miss, as his 10-year quest for his fifth major title persists. The 35-year-old executed an exceptional performance to progress from three strokes behind to two ahead of DeChambeau. Nevertheless, he was unable to convert two shots from within four feet on the final two holes.
The 30-year-old is the second golfer to win a major after leaving the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, following Brooks Koepka, who won the PGA Championship last year. After winning the 2022 Open Championship and 2023 Masters, Cameron Smith and Jon Rahm respectively, entered the Saudi-backed circuit.
