Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders dies in a plane crash

NASA, local authorities, and his family report that William Anders (Bill Anders), an astronaut among the first three people to orbit the moon, died Friday following a small plane crash in the water north of Seattle. He was 90. The Coast Guard for the Pacific Northwest said just before 1 p.m. local time that it and the San Juan County Sheriff's Office were tending to a plane crash between Orcas and Jones Islands, which lie approximately 80 miles north of Seattle. According to the sheriff's office, another boat was also responding, and their dive team was on the scene. Anders' son, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Greg Anders, confirmed the death to The Associated Press.
